Twitter, Google address China concerns

DAVOS, Switzerland — Twitter's co-founder and the head of Google on Friday addressed concerns about Internet censorship in China, speaking at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Google's chief told the meeting that censorship in China has to change but that the internet search giant wanted to stay in the Asian giant despite being the target of cyber attacks from inside China.

When asked about reports of China's attempts to block Twitter, the co-founder of the microblogging phenomenon, Evan Williams said he had been told about them but the company had no confirmation.

"That's what I've been told," he told AFP.

"I have heard reports on that," he added on the sidelines of the Davos forum, but said the company did not have direct confirmation.

China Blocks Twitter 2 Days Before The Tiananmen Anniversary

The Chinese Government has blocked access to Twitter, Hotmail and Flickr two days before the anniversary of the massacre in the Tiananmen Square.

This Thursday will be the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, when on June 4, 1989, the tanks entered the Square to crush protests by students and workers.

China has never made public the list of victims of what qualifies as a "counterrevolutionary conspiracy."

Google Uses Twitter to Sell Ads

Intuit Is First Marketer to Have Its Tweets Streamed Across AdSense Network (by Abbey Klaassen)

Twitter may still be tweaking its own business model, but Google has found a way to use the popular microblogging service to sell ads.

The search giant has started offering marketers ad units that stream their five most recent "tweets" across the Google AdSense network. The first marketer to use the ad units is Intuit, whose TurboTax brand is trying to boost its Twitter followers. Intuit used several of the measures available for any AdSense campaign to target the ads, which are running on sites such as Bebo, Facebook, Hi5, MySpace and Alltop.

"It's syndicating whatever the team that works on the TurboTax Twitter account [@turbotax] posts," said Seth Greenberg, director of marketing at Intuit. When a user clicks on an ad it takes them not to TurboTax.com but to twitter.com/turbotax.

UK Pupils to study Twitter and blogs in primary schools shake-up

Children will no longer have to study the Victorians or the second world war under proposals to overhaul the primary school curriculum, the Guardian has learned.

However, the draft plans will require children to master Twitter and Wikipedia and give teachers far more freedom to decide what youngsters should be concentrating on in classes.

The proposed curriculum, which would mark the biggest change to primary schooling in a decade, strips away hundreds of specifications about the scientific, geographical and historical knowledge pupils must accumulate before they are 11 to allow schools greater flexibility in what they teach.

It emphasises traditional areas of learning - including phonics, the chronology of history and mental arithmetic - but includes more modern media and web-based skills as well as a greater focus on environmental education.

Twitting Your Path To Enlightenment

Being king of a graphomaniac, the 140 characters allowed by Twitter to express my thoughts seemed at first very frustrating.

When you are used to write long articles without paying any attention to the lenght, starting with Twitter requires a radical change in your writing style.

Wanting to learn from the bests, I starting looking at authors who were famous for their laconic and straight-forward writing styles.

After investigating aphorisms, haikus and other short writing styles, I found a mind blowing concept in the Japanese Zen tradition: the Koan.

Koans are generally questions or statements that are not accessible to rational understanding, but are supposed to trigger enlightenment.

On Twitter, a typical koan would look like:

Zen_Rookie If I haven't anything in my mind, what shall I do?

Zen_Master Throw it out.

Zen_Rookie But if I haven't anything, how can I throw it out?
