Howard Zinn (1922-2010): U.S.A. Lost Their Compass

January 30, 2010 - Bad news: historian, writer and activist Howard Zinn died on wednesday (1/27) of a heart attack at the age of eighty-seven. We believed he was immortal, but the evidence is hard to deny: one of the most critical intellectuals of our time disappeared.

There would be so much to say to celebrate his work, specially his books.

A People’s History of the United States, presenting American history through the eyes of working people, changed the way we look at history in America.

Obama in Cairo: Words, Words, Words

June 05, 2009 - He talks the talk – but will he walk the walk? by Justin Raimondo

The Obama fan club – and by this I mean the media, of course – is already hailing our President’s Cairo speech as the latter-day equivalent of the Sermon on the Mount, and there is no doubt that it was a splendid performance.

Obama To Reveal Iraq Pullout Plan

President Barack Obama is due to announce the withdrawal of most US troops in Iraq by August 2010.

In a speech later, he is expected to confirm that the US "combat mission" in Iraq will officially end by that time.

He is also expected to say that up to 50,000 of the 142,000 troops will stay in Iraq after that date to advise Iraqi forces and protect American interests.

Some Democrats are concerned that the timetable may fall short of his election vow to withdraw troops.

Mr Obama had said previously that he would completely pull out troops within 16 months of taking the top job.

Earlier this month, he ordered the deployment of up to 17,000 extra US troops to Afghanistan.

The president said the soldiers had been due to go to Iraq but were being redirected to "meet urgent security needs".

Middle way

Mr Obama is expected to make his announcement in Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

Boston Globe Hears Call for Bush Administration Trials

A demonstrator dressed up as George W. Bush in a prison outfit

Want ex-leader accountable on Iraq war !

WASHINGTON - Like others bundled against the cold on Inauguration Day, a few dozen people along the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route were determined to catch a glimpse of President Obama. But they wanted him to see their simple, unmistakable message spelled out on black-and-white signs, adding a call-and-response chant for emphasis.

Who's our president?" one shouted.

"Obama!" the group answered.

"Who's going to arrest Bush?"

"Obama!"

Though the new president probably didn't notice them, the protesters holding the "ARREST BUSH" placards illustrated a thorny problem he will have to confront, perhaps sooner rather than later.

Blackwater Kicked Out of Iraq

U.S. Embassy's Preferred Contractor Accused of Killings

The Iraqi government has informed the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad that it will not issue a new operating license to Blackwater Worldwide, the embassy's primary security company, which has come under scrutiny for allegedly using excessive force while protecting American diplomats, Iraqi and U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Iraq's Interior Ministry conveyed its decision to U.S. officials in Baghdad on Friday, in one of the boldest moves the government has made since the Jan. 1 implementation of a security agreement with the United States that sharply curbed American power in Iraq.

Blackwater employees who have not been accused of improper conduct will be allowed to continue working as private security contractors in Iraq if they switch employers, Iraqi officials said Wednesday.
