UK: Social Network Sites Could Be Monitored

Social networking sites like Facebook could be monitored by the UK government under proposals to make them keep details of users' contacts.

The Home Office said it was needed to tackle crime gangs and terrorists who might use the sites, but said it would not keep the content of conversations.
It is part of a plan to store details of all phone calls, e-mails and websites visited on a central database.
Civil liberties campaigners have called the proposals a "snoopers' charter".

Tens of millions of people use sites like Facebook, Bebo and MySpace to chat with friends, but ministers say they have no interest in the content of discussions - just who people have been talking to.

Overkill

Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake said the websites contained sensitive personal details and he was concerned information could leak from any government-controlled database.

MySpaceID: Massively Improved and Integrated on Yahoo’s Home Page

Just because Facebook has more total users and just released Facebook Connect for iPhone doesn’t mean that MySpace is any less relevant.

In fact, they’ve been avidly working behind the scenes to support open standards in ways that are pretty revolutionary. Today their efforts have come to fruition with some major new announcements for MySpaceID, their identity platform that goes head-to-head with Facebook Connect.

MySpaceID will now pull in a member’s full profile to support streaming of user activities from MySpace to any site on the Web, it now integrates with OAuth and OpenID, and developers can get access to new MySpaceID SDKs. Also big news is that MySpace has partnered with Yahoo! to support MySpaceID login on Yahoo’s home page.

"Koobface" Worm Resurfaces on Facebook, MySpace

Facebook, MySpace Hit By Koobface Worm

Security experts are warning users of Facebook, MySpace and other social networking communities to be on guard against a new strain of the "Koobface" worm, which spreads by tricking users into responding to a message apparently sent from one of their friends.

The latest version of Koobface arrives as an invitation from a user's friend or contact, inviting the recipient to click on a link and view a video at a counterfeit YouTube site. Visitors are told they need to install an Adobe Flash plug-in to view the video.

The bogus plug-in instead installs a Trojan horse program that gives Koobface author(s) control over the infected user's computer, according to security firm Trend Micro, which documented the new strain on its blog.

Facebook Backs Down On Privacy Terms

Facing a federal complaint from a leading privacy advocacy organization and a revolt of tens of thousands of its users, Facebook on Tuesday night backed down from what many have seen as an onerous privacy policy.

Facebook informed all its users that it has, temporarily at least, reverted its terms of service to the previous version.

The policy had seemed to grant Facebook perpetual rights to users' uploaded content, and the threatened complaint from the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) had demanded, essentially, that the social-networking service return to its previous terms.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a blog post late Tuesday that the company had decided to do just that:
