Copenhagen 2009: How Good Is An Agreement That Destroys The World?

December 9, 2009 - The spokesman of the G77, Sudanese Lumumba Stanislaus Kaw Di Aping, has attacked the Copenhagen draft agreement prepared by the Danish Presidency.

"The Danish prime minister is desperate but should not confuse his political career with a deal at any price. There must be a compromise between the will of the rich and poor countries," said the spokesman of the G77 plus China, representing developing countries.

He complained that the draft is designed by and for rich countries and accused Denmark of siding with the developed countries instead of seeking points of agreement between the two blocs: "Developed countries have an historical responsibility for having damaged the atmosphere during the last 200 years. "

The European Union Ask China To Do More To Combate Climate Change

December 4, 2009 - Although China announced last week an ambitious energy efficiency plan to cut down CO2 emissions, Fredrik Reinfeld (Swedish Prime Minister but also the EU rotating president), said on Monday that "we can not solve the challenge of climate change for humanity if China does not assume a leadership role and responsibility".

"So far we believe that global efforts put on the table to mitigate the impact of greenhouse gases are not sufficient," Reinfeld said in the context of an EU-China summit held last Monday in Nanjing, capital of the coastal province of Jiangsu.

Global Warming In The Agenda Of The Pittsburgh G20 Summit

Sept. 24, 2009 - Last summit in London was centered around the financial crisis and the best strategies to get the global economy out of recession. Although it is expected that the reform of international financial institutions will still be an important part of the discussion in today Pittsburgh summit, some sentences in president Barack Obama address to the UN indicate that global warming will be part of the agenda.

According to sources in the White House, the US president will propose to his G20 partners a plan to eliminate subsidies on fossil fuels, in order to encourage the use of renewable energy and to fight against global warming.

Kiss Global Warming Goodbye, Say Hello To Global Cooling

While the UN, the ICCP and the WWF are calling world leaders to make all the necessary efforts to reach an agreement on greenhouse gases reduction at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change which will be held in Copenhagen in December (read Global Warming In The Arctic Above All Predictions), some scientists still dare to express opinions that conflict with the prevailing scientific opinion.

Global Warming In The Arctic Above All Predictions

Sept 03, 2009 According to a WWF 100 pages report that was released yesterday, the Arctic has warmed at about twice the rate of the rest of the globe over the last decades, and is projected to grow throughout this century and beyond.

The climate change is affecting the Arctic's physical and biological systems earlier and in a much worse way than previously predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007.

Could Coccolithophores Save The Earth From Global Warming ?

Ever heard of Coccolithophores? Despite their small size and their weird name, these tiny single-celled marine organisms are major regulators of global climate.

Most of the models used to predict climate change are based on ocean level, carbon dioxide and temperature measurements but fail to integrate marine ecosystems in their projections.

Actually, the whole process of climate and gas regulation by marine organisms is so complex that it is quite impossible to integrate in already complex models...and much more impossible to explain in details in this artile. I'll try to do my best to keep it simple, concentrating on one of the top players, the Coccolithophores.

Lights Out In 84 Countries For Earth Hour 2009

The lights are going down from the Great Pyramids to the Acropolis, the Eiffel Tower to Sears Tower, as more than 2,800 municipalities in 84 countries plan Saturday to mark the second worldwide Earth Hour.

McDonald's will even soften the yellow glow from some Golden Arches as part of the time zone-by-time zone plan to dim nonessential lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to highlight global climate change.

"Earth Hour makes a powerful statement that the world is going to solve this problem," said Carter Roberts, chief executive of the World Wildlife Fund, which sponsors Earth Hour. "Everyone is realizing the enormous effect that climate change will have on them."

India Warns Against 'Green Protectionism'

By Shaun Tandon

WASHINGTON (AFP) - India has warned against rich nations using climate change as a pretext for protectionism as the United States and France consider imposing environment taxes.

India's chief climate negotiator, Shyam Saran, was in Washington for talks with the new administration of US President Barack Obama, whom he praised for putting a new emphasis on halting the warming of the planet.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu -- hoping to ease concerns that climate action would worsen the US recession -- has suggested slapping a tariff on imports from nations that do not require emissions cuts to "level the playing field."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy seconded the view on Tuesday, saying he favored a carbon tax on imports from countries with lower environmental standards than his own.

Saran, addressing the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said: "Most developing countries will argue that we are already starting with a very unlevel playing field."

The Saline Solution

In the mid-'80s, an atmospheric physicist named Carl N. Hodges predicted that the key to saving the planet was to make the desert bloom—with a spindly saltwater plant known as salicornia, a.k.a. sea asparagus.

The idea languished for years, but now scientists, investors, and even celebrities are lining up behind the 71-year-old's vision for feeding the planet, fueling our cars, and reversing rising sea levels. "I don't know if I'm slow or the world is," says Hodges, the founder of the University of Arizona's Environmental Research Laboratory, "but finally it has all come together."
