WHO Fears Genes Exchange Between H1N1 and H5N1 Avian Flu

As the Influenza A/H1N1 virus continue to spread worldwide at a fast pace, WHO experts express concerns about possible genetical interactions with other Influenza virus, particularly with the deadly H5N1 (Avian Flu).

Health Ministers from 193 countries of the World Health Organization are meeting in Geneva (Switzerland) to draw up plans to fight the epidemic.

"We have reasons to fear an interaction of the virus A (H1N1) with others, including the H5N1, the avian flu, with has a high mortality rate among birds, but little effect in humans. This interaction would result in a much more dangerous influenza A" declared today Margaret Chan, the director of the WHO.

An Epidemic Nobody Talks About

While the international community is focused on the H1N1 virus, West Africa is experiencing a meningitis epidemic that could be easily contained but has already killed 1,900 persons and infected more than 56,000.

Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) (aka Doctors without Borders) have launched one of the largest vaccination campaigns in history, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and Chad, Niger and Nigeria governments.

In order to prevent the epidemic to extend, 270 groups of MSF are on the "battle field", each group being able to vaccinate 1500 persons daily. A minimum of 7 million persons need to be vaccinated for the mass immunization campaign to be efficient.

WHO Raises Swine Flu Pandemic Alert To Level 5

Seems that we have never been so close to an influenza pandemic since the Hong Kong Flu pandemic in 1968, as the World Health Organization raised the pandemic alert level to phase 5, just one level below phase 6 (declared pandemic).

WHO and other Health Authorities around the world were expecting that the next pandemic would come from a mutant strain of H5N1 (or other avian strains like H7N1 or H9N2)and laboratories were working on developing a vaccine against these candidates.

WHO Raises Swine Flu Pandemic Alert Level

On Monday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 3 to phase 4 (on a scale of 6), indicating that efforts to contain the spread of the virus had failed.

Keiji Fukuda, Head of the WHO Global Influenza Programme, said that outbreaks in Mexico, the U.S. and Spain demonstrate that the H1N1 virus expansion can't be hindered but does not require to close the fronters or to restrict travels, but "it is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention".

Epidemiological data demonstrate human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community-level outbreaks.

Although not yet a pandemic, the situation has to be considered very seriously worlwide.

Swine Flu: No Reason To Panic

Although the risk for the swine flu outbreaks to spark a pandemic are real, there is no reason to panic.

For almost 10 years now, World Health Organization and Public Health services woldwide are getting prepared for an H5N1 (Avian Flu) pandemic and have strenghten their emergency procedures, including early identification of the strain, prophylaxis, vaccine production capacity and coordination of the different players.

The current strain of H1N1 Swine Flu virus seems to be able to spread from human to human, but it is much less fatal than the H5N1 Avian Flu, and measures already designed to contain H5N1 would be efficient to limit the effect of a Swine Flu pandemic.

The strain has been quickly identified, and industrial labs are ready to produce large quantity of vaccine on WHO request.
