Honduras: The vacation of Lobo and his lambs in South Africa

I was conducting research near San Pedro Sula the last time Honduras went to the mundial, and remember vividly the way that it united people and completely absorbed their attention. While understanding that this event has a special status for those in Honduras, I have been noticing how little attention the world press has been able to pay to actual political developments in Honduras, in contrast with the wall-to-wall coverage of its world cup participation.

Clinton Urges OAS to Forget Coup, Readmit Honduras

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaking at the Organization of American States (OAS) annual meeting in Lima, Peru on Monday urged countries in the hemisphere to readmit Honduras into the regional organization. The OAS suspended Honduras after the military coup which overthrew President Manuel Zelaya last June.

A 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Honduras

An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale has caused at least one death and extensive damages in Honduras.

According to preliminary reports from the Fire Department and the Permanent Commission of Contingencies (COPECO) at least 30 homes collapsed in the municipalities of Yoro, El Progreso, Santa Barbara, Puerto Cortes and Gracias, regions in the north and west of the country.
